I think there’s definitely some homophobia in Highsmith’s thought process. Female athletes are too masculine in his mind, I’d wager. And you know what that means.

My guess is that Highsmith thinks a real man dates a cheerleader. A volleyball player is too ‘tall’ and ‘athletic’, as in possibly, er, Sapphic. This, I’m guessing, led Highsmith to conclude that Rosen may be using her as a beard to cover for his own, er, tendencies.
