It's not a waste, they use them so they don't have to make the valve covers and other would-be visible parts pretty. ie, paint and lettering on valve cover. Just cover all the crap with some decent looking plastic, done.
Sports cars have reached a point where it's hard to gain significant performance without electronic advancement. You can expect GM to throw as many computer chips as possible at this thing.
That's the best thing, an old ipod, a huge 64gb brick. Especially if the head unit is ipod ready, you never have to take the ipod out.

Because diesels have an inherently small powerband that tends to die down as the rpm's climb, not ideal for racing.
