Actually with transmissions coming with 6 and 7 speeds now it'd be more likely to mistakenly go into reverse while in motion trying to quickly shift. Having it near first gear gives you the ability to focus more when going into reverse, or even to look down at it if necessary

I disagree, these aren't sports cars that happen to have four doors, they're sedans that happen to be uber fast. Even the E39 was over 4000 lbs

I drove the 1st gen TC, hated it. Its made to appeal to newly-licensed drivers. The throttle is too sensitive, as are the brakes. It's very annoying, I had to concentrate to smoothly accelerate from a stop. The beltline is also entirely too high, I'm 6 foot and I couldn't even rest my damn arm out of the window
