More importantly, most winter accidents are the result of not being able to stop. AWD doesnt make a difference when trying to stop. Only putting on winter tires can help reduce stopping distance.

With a set of winter tires, it is good in much more than light snow. Check them out on youtube.

Suzuki SX4 AWD. I've seen sub-80K mile examples around here or $5K. The AWD system is actually impressive for an econocar. And you can disable AWD when roads are dry to gain gas mileage. It's a great winter commuter.
And I forgot to mention, you can disable AWD when the roads are dry to save on gas.
Save your money. A relatively low mileage AWD Suzuki SX4 can be had for less than $5K. With a good set of winter tires, that thing is unstoppable. And it even comes in potato masher transmission!
