You’re completely off base with all the problems you’re identifying here. This car is perfect as-is. You’ll never see yourself coming the other way in this thing. In that way, it’s rarer than a chrome-wrapped Lamborghini.

Autocross is basically through cones on a big parking lot or airfield against time. 2nd and 3rd gear stuff. Lower chance of car damage. Possibly tougher on tires because all turns are basically extreme, high transition stuff. Look up SCCA Solo.

Here’s my brother with our X1/9 back in the 1970s. I think it was about the same vintage. We once fit our whole family in this car (2 parents, 4 kids) for a short trip to our home after dropping our other Fiat off somewhere for repairs (a silver 131 wagon). I still don’t know how!

I propose that the left lane be texturized using very small intermittent bumps for the entire distance. Or maybe like those buzzing strips they press into the pavement near toll booths or on the shoulder, but probably not as loud. Then people would only stay in the left lane as long as needed and get out.
