I believe that 355 was the displacement for one cylinder in mL. They changed their naming convention because the new displacement was smaller (8x.355=2.84L). No one wants to trade their 348 for a 288 (but they should!).
I think I saw that same interview. I also think he mentioned something about market demand possibly affecting that in the future.
