About a year before we bought our house I completely paid off my student loan and my car and I had no debt other than small credit card balances I paid each month (our first house was in my wife’s name only as she had it before we dated). When we went through the pre-approval process for our home loan I was shocked

Yah, fuck you. People like you enable the economically strong to punish the weak for arbitrary bullshit like this.

This. 1000x this..

If you’ve been around people who refuse to spend money on anything, they get tiring to be around. All they do is brag about how they don’t spend money and how much money they are holding on to. I think secretly, they are unhappy inside.

Also with extremely low interest rates on some CPO cars and new cars, the ones who have low depreciation rates will cost you similar/less in the long run versus just paying out of pocket.

Car loans provide an advantage over paying outright as long as the interest rate is below the rate of inflation and rate of return in the market.

The “cars depreciate/don’t borrow to buy it” advice misses the obvious: cars can make you money. For most people, they need a car to get to work. And no, public transit is not a realistic option for most Americans.

you can’t possibly be this obtuse

I made a typo, you called a handicapped person and their husband idiots because you couldn’t be bothered to read an article.

Clearly when someone selects a username that implies a complete lack of impulse control, we should probably heed the warning.

You called them idiots without having actually read their letter. This does not reflect will on your character or intelligence.

It’s almost like there was a whole second paragraph in the question that addressed this point directly.

We’ve thought about possibly looking for a short-term rental of the following cars to do the evaluation, but local dealers aren’t interested, and car rental companies don’t have these vehicles

I thought it was not going to be in production for much longer, but wow, 2109?

You seem like a real asshole.

Tom said that in his article already, but your huffy whining really helps.

Well, this is certainly a testament to why Tom is the one getting these questions.

Citing what you did 10 years ago as some sort of relevant experience is dumb.

2009, middle to post recession, businesses closing up everywhere, people just needing to move inventory, pre- cash for clunkers, come on man.

You sound like all the old mechanics who still have a car from the early 90s wondering why nobody

Please stop arguing and just let this thread become a series of photo tributes to gorgeous ‘90s minivans.
