Here in GA you can get a really nice Z31 for $2,500, and a running one for $1,500 pretty easily if you keep your eyes open.

My girlfriend has a Golf TDI and it's fantastic: six speed paddle shifted DSG, tons of torque in a surprisingly quick little car that gets 50+ mpg on the highway.
