The games are niche because because the real-time multitasking battle mechanics have a high learning curve and don’t always resonate with people. Some find it way too stressful. Others enjoy getting into a flow with the gameplay loop.

This is pretty much standard practice for all mobile games in the casual space. They paste a thin story on the game and continually add “new adventures” when they add more levels. It is similar to how MMORPGs have story arcs with a set of expansions.
