I just found out that is true in California. In my state, and the majority of states, it is just enough that she is underage. Even if the accused had every reason to believe the victim was overage, in most states that is not a defense.

I think, as other people have said, it goes to the idea that he thought she was 18 (since you have to be 18 to be a stripper). Although, legally that doesn't matter because you don't have to have intent to be convicted of statutory rape.

I just learned from googling though that statutory rape is a "strict liability" crime, so it doesn't matter if you think the other person is a minor, only if they actually are. Even if they lie to you, show you a fake ID, whatever, it is still statutory rape.

What if she shows the guy a fake ID? Just asking because I'm curious before anybody jumps on me. I know if you sell alcohol to a minor that shows you a fake ID that is usually a legal defense.

Yes, that's what I said :-D

As I posted elsewhere, disease prevalence seems to track deaths closely. I'm not trying to say that there isn't a problem with the doctor's misconceptions, just that there is a statistical reason for a lot of the treatment difference.

Not sure where you're getting that from. Prevalence seems to track deaths pretty closely.

In addition to the fact that ladies are half (HALF!) as likely as men to be treated for one of the leading causes of heart problems

woman can and will suffer a heart problem just as much as any man

Me too, I was totally expecting some Jezsplaining.

That's what I don't get about this. If they really just cared about their child's wellbeing, they would not be doing what they are doing. The book, the TV appearances, the blog, none of it is helpful to him and a lot of it could be quite damaging. What are they trying to get out of it? Fame?

Yes, people that go out of their way to show to everyone how 'accepting' they are weird me out. Just love your kid and let them be what they want, you don't get a medal for that.

Agreed. Also, it seems kind of exploitative to be doing all this to point out how "special" your kid is. People that go out of their way to make sure everyone knows how accepting they are weird me out.

Maybe they're just covering their asses so female astronauts don't sue them when they end up with cancer.

So... this is interesting and all, but if NASA was sending men and women on the same number of missions wouldn't people we yelling about how they are sexist by giving lady astronauts cancer? Seems like a lose-lose situation.

Yep, I have a relative who contracted HIV 30 years ago and is still pretty much asymptomatic with the help of a lot of drugs. I know there is some outrage now because it is still quite deadly if you don't have access to the (often expensive) treatments. In first world countries people don't tend to hear too much

Not to say that it isn't a serious thing, but the disability adjusted life years for HIV/AIDS in the US is something like 5-8. That means that, on average, you will only have 5-8 years of significant disability or lowered life expectancy compared to an uninfected person. Again, that isn't great, but it is much less

Being a woman is a pre-existing condition. Insurance companies can't charge more for that, go ObamaCare! Otherwise I would be worried this might get some traction.

Companies wouldn't be hiring all these interns if they weren't getting something out of it. They realize that the money is the bottom line. If they are better off having the interns then not having them, then they should pay them MONEY in compensation for that. Everyone gets experience all the time at every job,

This seems overly broad though. It could be a professor in a whole different department whom you have never taken classes with and it would still be outlawed.
