Now that legitimate threats to Tesla’s near monopoly in the EV market are here (Taycan and numerous other pending models from VAG and other brands) Musk is trying to draw attention away from Tesla’s poor build quality and tepid design by trying to smokescreen using inflated range figures.

Their sales numbers are entirely due to the fact that they own an entire segment with almost no competitors, not because they are business savvy. It is a segment nobody else is much interested in focusing on because they can easily see that it is in decline and has been for quite some time.
