Gee, maybe adding more details to your black/white graphics, perhaps adding some kind of texture to the actual emissve blocks. How about inverted normal mapping that’s affected by dynamic lighting from spells, or light emitters when you parry. All of these things are simple to accomplish and ADD to their style choice.
