Airbus did a study called Cryoplane where they put the tanks along the roof. Some tradeoff in drag but overall workable.

Fuel cells can last 5x longer than piston enginers, and a rebuild costs $20k a pop for a plane.
Also liquid hydrogen actually has a higher specific energy than gasoline (though it is a bit bulkier)
