I’m frankly shocked Toyota doesn’t offer a plug in Tacoma / 4Runner
I know a lot of Sierra Club people who have these for their hobby because you can’t get far off road with a prius.

or hell, a PHEV highlander Prime ffs.

Ah ya got me. Fair enough.

Irony: Trying to drive and film the person next to you to complain about their inattentive driving.

Neutra: Nissan way over estimated the size of the market and spent the last years losing money hand over fist on over capacity. This gave everyone else the heebie-jeebies about building EVs.

with a semi, often the cargo has a pretty big effect on the fire as well

I talked to a guy who insisted he needed like 500 miles of range because once a year he runs up from the carolina’s to cape cod non stop in the middle of the night while his kids sleep so they don’t have to stop for bathroom breaks.

That’s not even safe.

I’d check out electrify america to see where the infrastructure will be by next year

A really good source on this is bloombergs NEF

They’re predicting battery prices around the magin $100/kwh where EV parity occurs in the mid 2020's.

Battery price reductions have been outpacing projections though (the prices in the link below are already well out of date), and their estimate is an average. So I think

A model S as a roadster mule would be hawt. Sort of like an electric AMG red pig

The model 3 motor thing already happened, hence the jump in range to 370. Or is there more coming?

You’re gonna be in Dos Equis commercials after buying one of these

The crazy thing is while it does charge at 150kw, the efficiency is so bad that the miles/hr of charging ends up pretty average

Since fuel cell stacks are still expensive, typically they’ll include a hybrid sized battery to handle regenerative braking and peak acceleration loads.

If you want to be pedantic they are FCEVs and what are colloquially called EVs are BEVs but in operation a FCEV drives much more like a hybrid that runs on a

The thing about out of the way places is that not that many people live there, so this is kind of an edge case. I’ve done this myself though and if you’re going to be there a while anyway a level 2 charger (or even 14-50 plug) will top you back up without all the expense of a rarely used DC fast charger (although

well and I think the practical energy density of hydrogen is typically overstated. Yes compressed hydrogen is similar to gasoline (33kwh/kg) but in order to have a practical fuel system you need a container. For gasoline this is basically negligable but a 5kg hydrogen tank strong enough to withstand the pressure

We are seeing batteries making surprising headway in these areas though just because of the extremely low cost relative to diesel fuel (Ferries for example). It may end up that the viable scale for hydrogen is so big (think cargo ships) that you can just run on much more energy dense LNG and do carbon capture instead.

With 100kw+ fast charging 200 miles is more than enough range unless you plan on towing or live somewhere where the cold may drastically affect your range.

200 miles means you have to stop for 15 minutes at the recommended 3 hour interval. Honestly most of the time someone you’re riding with will want a bathroom break

yeah I’ve also read that Japanese consumers are hesitant about EVs after Nissan had a lot of early pack failures on the leaf. Basically think of what Oldsmobile did for Diesel in the US.

But yeah. I’ve driven the clarity and... it’s fine. But it basically drives like a hybrid, which it basically is except with a fuel

I wouldn’t say Fuel Cells are DOA, just that they’re basically going to replace applications where you’d used diesel today (long haul heavy transport). As I understand it though they need automotive volumes to drive down the costs of fuel cell stacks and compressed hydrogen, hence the sniping at BEVs that are taking

My pet theory: The japanese government started placing big bets on hydrogen fuel cells (it’s a centerpiece of the 2020 olypics) and once they’d hoovered up all those billions in subsidies it was politically dangerous to abandon them in favor of battery EVs. But hey at least you can get a used Mirai for $17k, too bad
