it seems like for smaller vehicles this is more of an issue. The Volt’s packaging was definitely compromised by the battery. But the XC90 T8 and Pacifica PHEV really don’t give up much (no stow-n-go seats). The fact we still don’t have PHEV trucks is shocking.

After talking to two friends who bought non PHEV pacificas I think the dealers are just falling flat here. Neither knew that those cars qualify for tax rebates that mean the hybrid is cheaper than an equivalently specc’d V6 and they definitely DGAF about how much they were going to spend on gas.

I’m not sure why this

Apple is also one of the most profitable companies in the world right now.

Before the launch of the ETron and iPace I largely bought into this but Tesla does appear to have a 20% or so efficiency advantage that they’ve apparently extended further with the recent updates. That’s huge when your pack is a major driver of

yes but we’re also talking about a time when battery prices were in the $500-$1000/kwh range. Battery prices have fallen 85% at the pack level since 2010 and continue to drop at ~20%/ year. This means EV cost parity in the early 2020's for a lot of segments. Now that doesn’t mean everyone rushes out and buys and EV

Even in super EV friendly Norway it took a while but the ramp from almost no one buying an EV to it being the default choice was surprisingly rapid even though the cars weren’t all that different between 2011 and 2016. If Tesla can make it into the 2020's their future looks bright.

The selfish meme

But you can easily see how someone in the 60s might say they’d never drive an FI car. Within 15 years the tech had radically changed which is what’s happening now with battery prices falling 20% y/y and EV cost parity less than one model cycle away.

At the end of the day people are already talking about ICE bans by

This is why I always say Elon does not equal Tesla. There’re a lot of people working their asses off so this guy can look good working part time as CEO.
The day he leaves and they get a real COO I’ll buy the stock.

Fuel injection won out because it had superior economy and emissions and the changeover was driven by regulation, had they been left to their own devices they would’ve preferred to continue producing lower cost carbed engines. . Even high end sports cars were mainly carbed well into the 70's.

Sounds like what’s going

Yeah, basically looks at Audi or Lexus along with probably a half dozen other examples to how this works.

BMW and MB are definitely the exception, not the rule when it comes to powertrain differentiation. Your basic V6 and I4 are pretty much comoditized anyway.

Heck even sourcing the powertrain from suppliers is a

Imagine saying this about Carburetors in the 60s

By 2030 people will be saying it’s not possible for a corporation to obstruct justice

It’s definitely better than being a rich white woman trapped in one of said man’s cars

Dude that’s @dril!

Also even if it costs $10Bn it’s still cheaper than high speed rail, and you can always have minivans for those who can’t afford a personal car, subsidized by tolls

Jörgen take the wheel

once you have a very reliable way of keeping cars on the road and powering them why not extend the track and make it a slotcar-autobahn. Basically pay the toll and do the next 250 miles autonomously at 130mph off grid electricity.

You could go full steam-punk Elon Musk and use those inductive strips as virtual rails for self driving cars. Sort of like that idea from the 90s where they were going to use embedded magnets in the roadway as guideways.
