The R 3350 made it to production and flew ! It was turbocompounded , but not Diesel. Today’s F1 engines owe a lot to both of these. Rather than generate thrust , the F1 powerplants have to spin a generator to use the turbine’s contribution. 

For a truly wild time, consider the turbo-compound engine. This is basically a turbocharger but the turbine shaft is geared to the crankshaft. No, this isn’t a centrifugal supercharger. It still has the exhaust turbine.

I was lucky enough to play pit crew member for a day a couple of years ago with the Shank team when they raced Prototypes. They are a great bunch of folks and I hope they go far. I’m looking forward to meeting up with them all again when they come to CotA this year.
