That' actually not a co-driver, it's a photographer for Road & Track, Chris Cantle. I can't tell if it's his faith in the driver or just balls of steel, but he has a killer poker face throughout the ordeal!
For my school, getting a team going was a 4 year endeavor. The team spent 3 years doing SAE Baja to prove that they were committed to the project, and their senior year actually doing the FSAE. That was the only year it happened, as it was too expensive to run and the results weren't promising for future years.
One exposure/ access point for SpaceX that is outside of the top schools is the FSAE competition in Michigan each year. FSAE draws teams from many different schools, and the teams basically design and build a race car from scratch. It's an amazing event; and SpaceX uses the event to pick up some of the best gearheads…
