Any time there's a prophecy, "chosen one," or fate involved, you can be sure the script is a fat wet stinking load. It's usually the filmmakers' way of making sure everything works out just the way they said it would, without having to bother with an actual plot or character development.

I think a lot of this has to do with the execution too. More specifically the balance between showing off a rich world and focusing on character development and interaction. I think Game of Thrones hits that nail right on the head. Its an epic world where epic things are happening, but the focus isn't on that, its
