A totally reasonable separate choice, but otherwise terrible advice for normal people who just want battery savings. As an IT guy I had to fix so many phones for users who followed this advice then couldn’t figure out why they never got email.

This is literally both the oldest battery-saving tip for Android AND the worst. If you want a slightly more useful brick for a smartphone, great. But background data is most of the show. This was a bad idea when people were doing it with Donut, and it's a bad idea now with Pie.
