I see the listings all the time, entry level technical position, Phoenix, Rockville, Wellsboro, Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Birmingham. Thing is, where I work in [desirable city, USA] we oftentimes poach from firms in smaller cities. Even if you don't want to end up there it can be a stepping stone.

Just a thought, but I know of a great many places that are hiring but are in what might be considered "undesirable" locations. Unfortunately the awesome cities are overflowing with highly qualified, underemployed people. Time to start looking in New Jersey, Ohio and even, gulp, Texas.
