I recently heard his brother, Aniz, on a podcast relate that their mom asked to be removed from the family text group because Aziz is always trying out bits there. That cracked me right up. They’re a delightful family.

At this point, on the Monday of the first week of this presidency, I feel like I already have enough material to keep congressional staffers on the phone for ten minutes or more. Let’s see... nightmare appointments (whom I can list by name and state my reasons for voting against each), refusal to release tax returns,

Oof. Poor Cassandra couldn’t trot out art as an accomplishment when it came to snagging a husband on the marriage mart. I hope she played a mean harpsichord, or sewed fine, even stitches.

As for the statue, the face is vague, but the wardrobe is fantastic. I love the movement in the skirts. Without definitive sources

My husband stayed home with the kids. I didn’t ask him if he wanted to. I said, “I’m going to the march. You can either come with me, and we’ll bring the kids, or you can stay home. Either way’s fine.”

He chose to stay home, but styled it thusly: “I’m going to stay here and wait by the phone, in case I need to come

We had a great time! The rally and subsequent strategy summit were attended by an estimated 3,000. When we marched on the street, people were laying on their horns and giving us thumbs up and fists of solidarity. It was electrifying. Our numbers are small compared to elsewhere, but we are HERE and we are fired up.

Here’s my sign after I put the finishing touches on yesterday. He’s a bit soggy and wrinkly now.

This is GLORIOUS.

This was an amazing day. Even down here in SC, it was an amazing day. Rallying with thousands of progressives on the steps of our state house sure takes the wind out of the idea that this state is irretrievably red. We can make a difference. Even here, if we carry the spirit of this day with us, we can effect change.

It is usually in February. I was so looking forward to it coming up soon!

Thank you for this. I, too, believe in America’s ability to (eventually) pull our head out of our ass.

It seems like we need these shakeups every few generations to rattle us out of complacency. In the past, social upheaval has been followed by an expansion of civil liberties and prosperity for a while, then the tide moves back out (but not as far out as it was before), and we start again. That’s what I’m hoping will

That’s a good point. “You’re not the boss of me” is a founding principle of this country.

I hope so, as well.

Perhaps this is me grasping at straws, but I wonder if part of the inevitability of autocracy and failure of resistence in Gessen’s experience is at all related to the fact that Russians had already lived under an oppressive government for generations before Putin came along.

In my more Pollyanna moments, I hope that

What happens? Almost certainly nothing. I’m a huge proponent of judiciously filtering through the pregnancy food hysteria and doing as you damn well please. Be smart with your food sources, but if you want a deli meat sub, then by all means have one, and look the haters in the eye while you slowly bite and chew. Other

Wow, thank you for those links. Very interesting.

Hmmmmm.... Someone should pitch that idea to a network.

I wonder who makes the Klan’s dumb costumes. Is there a company that specializes in sheet ghost hoods, or are they all homemade affairs?

Who would you like to see at the top of the ticket? I haven’t gotten as far as thinking up running mate combos yet.

I feel dirty agreeing, but you may be right. :( Although, maybe her status as a war hero will mitigate some of that disability bias. They do love tooting their horns about supporting the troops.
