I’m Canadian, and I’ll submit, for context, that I didn’t know ‘cotton-picking’ was a racially-charged expression, as opposed to a quaint anachronism that Bugs Bunny used to splutter, if I remember correctly.

I agree to some extent in that there are probably a lot of people who have heard the phrase for decades and have used it not knowing its origins.

I grew up (VT) thinking of that term as a way to lampoon the old folks, or as a synonym to something along the lines of “dadgum” or the like...kind of a country-fried version of “wait just a fucking minute.”
