Just some clarifications – they don’t have the rights to anything from The Silmarillion and The Hobbit doesn’t have appendices. The ‘additions’ are apparently coming from the appendices in The Lord of the Rings.

I agree - there is far more involved in the number of deaths caused by firearms than just the proliferation of weapons. However not having weapons freely available must be a factor.
