I think it is and they are littering the marketing with similar images (e.g. pods, hands touching on glass) to make people think it's Khan when in fact it's just a new nasty bad guy.

Actually, a lot of fantasy has very well thought out magical systems. Really good fantasy has magic in which not everything is possible and the limits of the magic help create plot tension.
