Really it just depends if they keep innovating the game. Ingress had a very strong following of dedicated users but they let the game sit as it was and didn’t engage their user base enough so it eroded.

On your first point, following your logic, Candy Crush and Clash of Clans shouldn’t be among the top grossing games in the app store because they’re old and early adopters should be maxed out by now. And yet, here we are.

Main income is microtransactions, it is sponsorships by companies like mcdonalds for special pokemon at their places and permanent lures to tempt customers in.
