I think Final Fantasy should've taken the route of games like Shin Megami Tensei. Keep it true to it's root and hold on to your original fanbase. That means a more modest production and less sales but the franchise lives on.

I don't think Index Holdings knows how to make games and they simply let Atlus do their thing. Under Square they would probably have to cater to their editorial needs.
