Well, I'm a pretty cloistered and provincial straight suburban white guy. Occasionally dense and clueless. My only saving grace is awareness of my own limitations. I had very little knowledge of other people's miseries.

I remember when I asked a lesbian friend to explain her views and perspectives. She very patiently (and a little testily) gave me this same response. I've passed it on to my friends who also want to do right in the world.

There's a story by horror writer Robert Devereaux called "Little Miss Ultrasound" that covers this very thing.
