While the number four does signify death in Japanese, four fingered gestures in particular are taboo in Japanese games and media because they are derogatory references to Burakumin, who are descendants on the "untouchable" caste from feudal Japan.
I thought the one of the skeleton ripping out of the painting was the best, then I scrolled down a little further and saw the one of the girl shimmying, and now I'm can't decide which one if my favorite.
I've read three of the Logan's Run books - I think there were at least four - and the story is fleshed out a little bit more.
That scene is sadly lacking in dueling tractors or the hero sliding a horse under a truck, but is still awesome.

I think a good rule of thumbs is that if a writer uses the terms "bourgeois intellectuals", "pseudo-intellectual", and "bourgeois social order" in a single paragraph, at least one of the first two probably apply to them.
