Peter Watts wrote a brilliant short story that retells the movie from the perspective of the thing.
One the flip side they at least gave the powers some actual parameters, hopefully the writers will actually stick to them and keep the powers consistent so we can avoid the "power creep" that plagues most of the superhero genre.
They did show her seeing smells though, both when sniffing the spent casing in the office and when finding the gun in the shooters apartment.
That's my problem with most other super strong characters in movies as well, i.e. every Terminator movie would've been about 10 minutes long as the first time one of them catches John Connor it could've simply crushed his skull rather then just limply throw him around a room until he manages to escape.

Hear, hear! Less useless filler episodes and more focused storytelling. And knowing that all 13 episodes will air makes me more likely to start watching, because it's incredibly frustrating when they pull the plug on a series without letting it tie up the current storylines first.
