@jawamachines: Well I remember an old 3D display tech that used pyramid shaped pixels that could display different colors at each side of the pyramid to achieve the same effect described in this article.

@MacAttack: Nah, the snow is hard packed, basically a wall of ice, so it wont fall down easily.

@TheLostVikings: It might look like it wouldn't be able to handle very tall snowdrifts, but remember that as it takes out the bottommost snow the rest falls down to where it can reach it.
