While I agree from a good copy standpoint, it just feels more than a little cold to talk about the reputation of the band in this context.

Wouldn't a "consolation prize" indicate that he didn't win what he was going for (successful heart surgery and, y'know, living), but at least he came away with something (being internet famous)?

Richard Garfinkle has three of my favourite hard sci-fi books in Celestial Matters, All of an Instant, and Wayland's Principia. Wayland's ended up being like, diamond hard, but it was rewardingly tough.
