The truth keeps changing. He was a Simmons fan, he wasn't a Simmons fan, he kinda knew who Cousin Sal was, he wanted to read the mailbags, he loves Grantland, he needs a year off from 90210 references...When he sticks to a snarky comment, I'll believe the truth.
If any athlete, celebrity, or public figure used the word 'retarded' in this way, Tom/Deadspin would be the first to vilify them and ask for their firing in a condescending, self righteous troll like manner. But this is somehow 'perfect' Bravo Tom, your streak continues.
Right, but you see, it was said by a minority who's testifying on behalf of another minority who died at the hands of a non-minority. It's totally fine. Liberal 101.

How is this a perfect answer? This is actually an offensive use of the term. One that Gawker would be all over if anyone with pale skin or a position of power had used in a public setting.
It's a classic case of making the evidence fit whatever reality occurs. If Hernandez has kept his nose clean, earned a couple of rings, and racked up a nice career, Peter King would have been criticizing the teams that passed on him in the draft and saying, "SEE? SEE? That's fine logic. So why would there EVER be any debate as to which player deserves the title of "Most Valuable in the League," then?
Here's where you made a basic mistake. It's true that 500 dollars(Carmelo) is worth more to you than to the Heat. But 800 dollars (Lebron) is worth more to both of you. If you remove Carmelo and Lebron, yeah the Knicks would probably be worth off. But if you replace Carmelo with Lebron the Knicks would be better, end…
The award should always go, in every sport, to the player who had the best year. If you use the logic that favors Carmelo Anthony here, you're giving him an award because he has lower-quality teammates than LeBron James. How is that a basis for an award?
If Washburn is going to get caught up in semantics, it's disingenuous of him to not recognize that thanks to advanced metrics, he can objectively measure overall value, independent of the team. And by any reasonable measure, LeBron has added more value to the Heat than Melo has to the Knicks.

Something else I noticed, the Harvard band has more diversity than Gawker.
