I think install mods should be on this list, that tends to make my favourite games feel new to me.

I remember this from when I was young, and I might be completely making this up, but from what I recall, it wasn’t because ninjas were taboo, but because it seemed to promote violence without explaining that it was with a good cause. Hero turtles seemed to better reflect the values behind the violence!
