it's 2 photos layered on top of each other. The flag is one photo and the rocket is a second picture. In the darkroom the two negatives are placed on top of each other and then the final picture is made from that. Modern photoshop you would cut out the flag and paste it on top of the rocket photo.

My afternoon has just been booked. Quick fast forward to Porkins!

Since I was digging in the Archives:

Bingo:

Unfortunately most of the online archives only show credit to Kipp Teague who was the guy at NASA that scanned the images into the database. He didn't take the photo's though. There was a big team of photographers and the cameras didn't meta tag the images with all the details like they do today.

I might be able to dig it up in the NASA archives pages. Just a quick check a few minutes ago it looks like the @NASAKennedy twitter feed had it today and said the same thing and they gave the altitude of 5,000 ft on the rocket in the shot.

This one was actually a double exposure and not perfect timing. aka 1960's photoshopped

The smile does make it a bit too creepy I think. The old space helmet face was better because it hid the fact that it was a robot and made it more acceptable for some reason to me.

I'm a huge space junkie and I got to work at KSC for a project back in 2008 and was able to hang out and chat with several of the folks who worked on Apollo. It was a real treat that I will never forget. I'm curious how the new launch system will compare when it flies.

They didn't call it a flying brick for nothing. Smoked like a oil refinery fire too.

Now playing

Here is a link to The Lego Story. Everything you ever wanted to know about the Lego Company beginnings and more:

I grew up in Indiana and the good stuff was banned. Later on the law was changed to allow the sales of the rockets and bigger items but you had to sign a waiver to promise to take it out of state for use. This opened the market to everything.

The photo is a previous jump. If you watch the video there is almost no freefall on this one. The Parkinson's must really have him disabled these days cause he doesn't really raise his hands or move at all in the whole video. Also why on the landing he lands limp and the Golden Knight guy struggles to hold him up best

This is a really neat view of how storms form and grow. Beautiful but scary as well.

nice one. +1 for a great obscure reference.

Have heard some great stories of what it was like to see a launch in person. Maybe some day we'll do something this big again.

Looks a bit familiar somehow.

I love it but its missing Wile E Coyote!

There should be an entire movie about Porkins. Maybe a quick cameo of a pizza box or chicken bucket to lead you into it like they do with the Marvel movies.
