Pretty much every time I talk about my martial arts online some dude comes around to tell me how a big man could still overpower me, so I'm inclined to agree with you. That and, every dude thinks they're AMAZING at fighting regardless of whether they've actually been in one.

My MMA is mostly based on BJJ and Muay Thai. I think BJJ would probably be the best "pure" style for self defense purposes, although my MMA school has a kiddie class as well so that's a possibility.
