I agree with you. I entered a school tournament once and saw it for the first time. It's clearly a exploit and was pretty disgusted with it's widespread use. Thankfully, I beat all of the ones that did that stupidity. Brawl removed that shit for a reason people.

It may not have saved the gamecube, but it could certainly help the Wii U. Circumstances around each console could not be more different. There are many variables at play here and there are three major ones failing for the Wii U. The specs, the library and the price. The gamecube had it's own failing variables.

Your last point explains exactly why the "hardcore" hate it. Personally, I don't mind it being weaker than the ps4 and xbone but at the very least it needed to be in the same ballpark or be much cheaper. There are practically phones with better specs than the Wii U already.
