The ships launched after ME2, before the Reapers’ existence was common knowledge. Which, in meta terms, means they’ve found a way that they don’t need to make any one ending canon. Whatever happened at the end of whichever save file is your primary, that’s your canon!

Doesn’t matter. The ark ships were launched before the events of ME3, when the reapers weren’t common knowledge, so whatever ended up happening in the Milky Way is a non-issue to this game.

Not a prequel. The ark ships were launched in the time between ME2 and ME3, + a 600 year journey in stasis.

I never saw the direct quote myself, so grain of salt, but I believe it’s been said that whichever sibling you don’t choose sticks around as part of the “main cast.” Maybe not as a squad mate, but at least as a supporting cast member.
