Don't bother. Half Life 2 was the most boring piece of shit I ever played. The entire game is one mission, get from point A to point B. You spend about twenty hours in vehicles with shitty control doing nothing.

That has been a mod since Morrowind. I don't know if there was a hardcore mode in the earlier games. But I'm fairly positive that there's a hardcore mod for Skyrim. Though I don't think you have the PC version, or you'd likely know this.
