The board was splitting due to hanging sideways (external stress some refer to as gravity) not humidty, etc. I understand wanting to steer away from glue as a matter of principle but sometimes it can be a valid solution to a problem

hand planes are something ive been trying to get into but am having trouble cause im poor and also dont have a garage or other large workspace.
There was one time where I almost got a retired carpenters collection of hand planes (roughly 40 different planes from various tiny block planes to ancient hand crafted…
For sure, if you can find cheap old ones made with good steel (craigslist, etc) and have the time, there are a lot of tutorials on re-shaping/sharpening old chisels to make em good as new (same goes for hand planes)
One easy way to make the table look more awesome (and make yourself feel awesome) is to buy a set of chisels a enhance the entire table to using large mortise and tennons for some of the large cross pieces. For large pieces it isnt super complicated, and you can cheat a lot of the work with drill bits.
