What made it a great non-ending ending?

While I understand the logic behind it, I've never really cared for the ending of Empire Strikes Back. As the middle chapter in a three-part story (not a trilogy), it's conclusion was basically just a set up for the next episode. And yet, it was remarkably awesome, anyway.

Let's see these pompous asses disparage Le Guin's Earthsea novels or Tolkien's The Hobbit as mere kiddie lit...
