Rail crashes make the news because they're statistically rare, like plane crashes. When one happens, everyone finds out. There's a car accident fatality every 15 minutes on average in the US alone, so unless it's someone famous like yesterday's Paul Walker crash it tends to not make the news beyond the local area.

Were all the train lines in the world build in the same period? It seems like there a new derailment every week.

The ABC station here had a graphic that claims the Metro North is a "subway." Bzzt! It is a regional rail line, not a subway line.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE HIGHLANDER? SERIOUSLY? Haha I always enjoy discussions on the aesthetic merits of a new appliance.

Fox: "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious automobiles without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Al Qaeda works."

One idea I've pondered was "CNC casting". Where a foundry can do small batch castings by having a CNC machine carve the packed sand rather than having to make up forms. It would be useful for a small volume operation that would be followed by CNC. For example: A race team wants to build a custom engine. Instead of

This post is #Fail on so many levels. You leave out Indianapolis, who has underserved bus services, and put in Minneapolis, where many natives I know <3 their setup.

Marta is only good for going to the airport during rush hour, or going to sporting events.

Def! It'd be great if they could do some sort of Trans-Hudson rail line. If they made it inexpensive....maybe like $2.00-$2.50 a trip, I would totes do it!

There's no traffic on a train...

Ultimate solution?

Agree 110%

Shhhhhhhh us dumb citizens are supposed to ignore what politicians do!

If you ever visit Toronto we still have some kickin' around, even though most of our transit fails in comparison the the rest of developed countries! (Google ttc subway map vs nyc subway map)

Its strange that in New Orleans they are re-laying track where old track used to be. They closed down one line about 30 years ago only to have to rebuild the power lines and the track.

Tearing out the street car systems was a huge mistake.

Right, the other big issue is that in the last 30 years cities have been struggling to re-add street cart/light rail systems into their cities.

Ironically my city (Omaha) is now investigating returning to streetcars just like we had in the prewar period.
