Joss Whedon actually addressed this 3 weeks ago on Reddit. When asked if killing off his beloved characters had an effect on him, he wrote:

Looks like a mashup of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets cloning

Oh that's a bit harsh.

They decided to go the slow route. The Police wouldn't arrest him, so the prosecutor is convening a Grand Jury to get him arrested that way.

As a Muslim, let me say that I'm horrified by this. There is nothing, absolutely nothing in the Quran that justifies this. It doesn't even say to kill for adultery (unlike the Bible).
