Well, the fact is, BioWare was trying to tell a specific story in the Mass Effect trilogy. Sure, it could have been more meandering as far as space travel and exploration go, but it was a game harder worked harder on characters and story than open world exploration. On my first playthrough of Dark Souls, I could NOT GET PAST THAT BOSS FIGHT. I started a whole new game, rolled a completely different character, then beat that boss fight on my first try. Nope moment conquered.
