It's a weird thing, people constantly doubt Kojima and his decisions, previously with every MGS game, and I imagine if he previously revealed this game and the kind of puzzles it has, people would start to bash him for it, too.

Exactly. I think that taking away the player's ability to fight back against the monsters really exposed the repetition of the chase sequences. The fact there was basically only one monster in the entire game repeated over and over again just made that even more obvious.
