It’s the Internet Amplification System at work. A few people notice something of an imbalance in the diversity levels of the show, and all of a sudden it’s a scandal. The internet does not know how to pick its battles. A minor scratch and a deep stab wound get almost equal screams. It certainly will be nice to see

Step 1. Make up controversy

I agree. Google “Jessica Jones Cast”.

I’m just wondering what it would take to satisfy these guys. And by “these guys” I mean Jill and the other commenters, not American minorities in general. Wait, maybe I should’ve said “these girls.” No, wait, is that sexist?

You could be a little less rude. I feel like we’re trying to have a discussion in good faith.

I have Charles. I think there’s just a difference of opinion going on here.

Two Frighteners anecdotes:

As a person of colour, this is the first I’ve heard of it regarding Jessica Jones. I’m kind of surprised at it.

In contrast to the example regarding Malcolm, I actually adored the arc that they put that character through. He went through shit and in the end he evolved through it as a very likeable character that you

What does diverse mean to you? Does it mean that every demographic is present? You’re talking about prominent placement of a black lead actress, which is something entirely different.

Oh, stop.

Internet outrage is a helluva drug...

And her 2nd season love interest is a Latino man!

The show’s more about the mental health and fallout than the diversity. I wonder what Charles is actually wishing for here. And does he know he’s wishing for it?

I looked over the first season and second season’s cast just assuming that perhaps I had swapped characters around in my head between series and no, I didn’t. It’s got a pretty strong supporting cast made up of a diverse group of people.

“the series has been rightfully criticized for the ways in which it handles its (very few) characters of color.”

Rightly criticized? I disagree. Her love interest is a black man. One of the most noble characters in the show is a black man who I don’t think was shortchanged at all in terms of story. Is it worth asking

Because it doesn’t.

I swear to God I never knew this show had a diversity “problem”....

Yeah! “Lesser known” my butt. And Chi was on Boston Public for years. And John Astin is “lesser known”? News to me!

Jeffrey Combs is a treasure. He’s so delightfully insane here.

If memory serves me, this was a fairly poorly reviewed movie that was a rare miss for MJF. I dunno, I remember seeing it and liking it alot
