I’ve had the Summon option pop up during battles in the Shinra VR. Mostly fighting that BS jerk off toad spamming Sagahin Prince. I’m pretty sure I used the summon there also.

Arise just takes a LOT of AP to get. But yes, you only earn AP from winning battles, not from using the materia.

If you do decide to grind in the Shinra VR, make sure you save before continuing on in the story. there is a bug right after that that may lock your game. I think the confusion is that the console is there, but you can’t do anything with it by default. you need the cheatengine to get it to recognize commands.

A few of the boss battles are difficult, ALMOST to the point of frustration, but not quite. I didn’t run into any that seemed poorly balanced or buggy though.
