I'd argue that the cancellation of the season has more to do with the lack of control of the coaching staff, that either a) they had no idea what took place in their locker room, or b) they knew about it and did nothing, perhaps even condoning the behavior.

In lower levels of ball you'll see players block the base with their leg, especially on steals and pick-offs. Some leagues don't allow metal spikes, and most players don't know about the "unwritten" rules regarding this...
