I think they can totally fit inside of the sled (without heads or limbs outside to be injured) and are supposed to quickly drop their heads in situations like this. Here it appears that the pilots head was out, but relaxed enough that pushing against the wall just drove the head back into the sled...

Depends on whether you can rest in good conscience knowing that this money you're spending is funding & supporting all the awful things that they are hiding from your immediate view.

Meh.. I think the main reason is that it looks just so damn awkward. There are plenty of people I would take photos with and side-hug them, and there are people that wouldn't feel familiar with enough to hug. That's not the problem at all, you just don't hug them and put your hand somewhere where it doesn't look like…
