@Tarzanti: The summons were represented but not really used. They were more like buff/debuffs on characters. This sounds more like seeing Ifrit actually lobbing magma chunks at people.

@Eternal: It's kinda like power rangers, you go by the colors. Tidus is yellow, Vaan is red and blue and shirtless, Cloud is dark blue, and Squall is leather.

I bet it was a carbon dioxide release from the water. Like the one lake that killed everything around it after the water had been disturbed. It released a giant CO2 bubble, causing people and animals to asphixiate in the immediate vicinity.
