@steino: The weight actually is an issue! They have a new classroom up on the roof (a biology lab, I think) but only around 15 people can be up there at a time.

My highschool in Manhattan recently (this year) ripped up our black tar roof and installed a "green roof" which is supposed to cool the building in the summer, insulate the building in the winter, provide more oxygen for the environment, control water runoff, and prolong the life of the roof.
